Patrick Jane is a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. Jane is a valued member of the CBI team, using his observational skills and lateral thinking which he learned during his past as a television pyschic to solve crimes. Despite his lack of boundaries and disregard for protocol, he is valued because his tricks, ruses and mind games close cases. After his wife and daughter were murdered, he joined the CBI to catch and kill the perpetrator Red John.
Patrick has a cheeky personality with a generally happy demeanor, allowing him to get along with his team mates, especially Teresa Lisbon. However, Jane suffers enormous guilt over the deaths of his wife and daughter as well as a ferocious determination to kill Red John, the serial killer that murdered them. Despite his grudge against Red John, Jane is reluctant to wield weapons except in extreme circumstances, those extreme circumstances are often involving Red John. He is a master manipulator and although he openly admits to not actually having psychic powers, his success in solving crimes have people exclaiming that there must be something special about him.

In 2010, Simon Baker was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama”, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award for “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series”. Baker was also a 2009 Emmy® Award nominee for “Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series” for his role in “The Mentalist”.
Baker’s film credits include Curtis Hanson’s critically acclaimed “LA Confidential”, Ang Lee’s “Ride with the Devil”, Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me”, George Romero’s “Land of the Dead”, David Frankel’s international box office hit “The Devil Wears Prada” the sequel to “The Ring” with Naomi Watts, the indie Sundance competition favorite “Book of Love” and the interracial love story, “Something New”. He also worked alongside Kevin Spacey and an all-star cast in the critically acclaimed “Margin Call”, which was recognized with several awards including an Academy Award® nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Prior to “The Mentalist”, Baker was known for his striking performance as Nick Fallin in the drama “The Guardian“. Throughout his career, Baker has pursued his interest in directing, beginning with an episode of “The Guardian” and more recently, several episodes of “The Mentalist”. Baker was immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work on Feb. 14, 2013.
Recently, Baker became the face of Givenchy’s new men’s fragrance, “Gentlemen Only,” and is a brand ambassador for the Swiss watch company Longines.
His involvement with Artists for Peace and Justice, focused on rebuilding infrastructure in Haiti, led to a friendship with Mending Kids International. He is also involved with the organization Life Rolls On and their flagship program “They Will Surf Again,” which pushes the boundary of possibility for those with spinal cord injuries. He actively supports Planned Parenthood and The Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking.
